Obtaining Australian Medicinal Native Plants

Postby mrbgen » Tue Jun 14, 2011 7:44 pm

I work as a volunteer for National Trust. We are developing a program for school children to teach them of the way that plants can be used for medicinal purposes. Accordingly we need ot obtain some of these plants and grow then in our small garden.

Naturally we have to be very careful about what plants are used and any reactions that MIGHT happen if children are allowed to touch them. Accordingly we want to simply grow them, show them, and explain how they can be used.

So far we have found many books to cover some such plants, but our difficulty is in actually finding where we can BUY some plants. Can anyone direct me to such a place in Sydney. Prefereably we are looking for the smaller bushy type plants and NOT large trees.

Any help would be appreciated

A subject very close to my heart.
Naturally you have to be very careful

The first step would be to PM me with some more qualified detail
_ Any plant will grow from a single bud if you can replicate the required circumstances.

Hiya, folks! I'm Liliana and I'm a newbie to the forums. I'm certainly not one to provide advice on this type of subject, but I really am interested in learning more medicinal plants! Of course, that's why we're all here, isn't it? =)

MrBGen: I think it's wonderful that you're introducing children to the world of nature and to plants' medicinal properties. Although many plants aren't yet approved under standard practices, I think we can learn a lot about plants effectiveness on certain people. . .and cultures for that matter.

Should you complete your research soon, I would love to learn more about what you discover -- or better yet, what you thought you would discover. Do post your research in another forum and keep us posted. =D

Speaking of plants, I'm interested in growing my own plants for my own type of "medicinal research." Nothing special, really. I'm interested in growing some tea leaves and seeing what can come from it in terms of health. Anyone know of where I can purchase some wholesale flower pots?

O.K. I'm rambling. Good luck with your experiment, MrBGen! I'm interested in learning all you have to discover!!!
