Nuts can go rancid because of their high oil contents, but they don't rot as such unless in contact with dampness. You can fairly successfully store nuts for a very long time (esp. if in their shell) in cool dry conditions. Think about squirrels burying their nuts for winter usage over a few months! Even if the shells themselves go a little mouldy, the kernel is generally ok unless the rot/mould is very far advanced.

Out of the shell and in airtight containers ... well, I've had nuts stored for many many months at a time. Pine nuts are a good example of how to store bunyas, I reckon, and I've got a jar that's been doing me for about six months with no problems. (Normally, of course, they don't last that long - I love pine nuts!!).

Bunyas also freeze _very_ successfully - that's how I bought my Cherikoff lot.

Bunya nut suppliers

Postby sammyringer » Fri Oct 20, 2006 8:51 am

OK all - I have a list of all the Bunya suppliers I could find up on my website-
www.ausbushfoods.com

It's the top item at the moment - the searchable database is on its way - really! php and mysql are a new world to me but I'm slowly getting the hang of it.
Now if all you Bunya fanciers can wait till early next year, we'll have bunyas galore - while you're at the site, check out the 'Bunya Consortium' - nav bar on right will take you there.
Happy bunya hunting

Further to my original post on the topic, Eden Seeds now specifically have different prices for eating and planting:

BUNYA NUTS
Araucaria bidwillii
Majestic Queensland rainforest tree. Excellent timber. Huge cones yield up to 1.5kg of nuts, with low fat, high carbohydrates. Eat raw, boiled with salt or best roasted in the coals 2 minutes, can be dried and ground into a flour. (about 60 seeds per kg)
Kernels for Eating:
400g - $4.00, 1kg - $8.00
For Growing Purposes:
400g - $4.40, 1kg - $8.80
(Please add bulk postage)

(http://www.edenseeds.com.au/cms/content ... ewsletters, scroll down).

$8/kg for eating is _very_ good indeed!!

Bunya nuts

Postby sammyringer » Mon Mar 05, 2007 3:56 pm

I don't want to undercut a commercial supplier but I have a small number of Bunya nuts (germination only, not eating) that I'm happy to send to Qld people for postage.

We cook them by wrapping them in some fine chicken wire and putting them over hot coals or in a fire. They kind of explode, but the wire stops them from flying around dangerously. I think they taste better cooked like this.

My mum once tried to grind them into flour (shells off) and broke an expensive food processor. Otherwise, you can boil them up (before or after you take the shells off), they taste nutty and I'm getting hungry thinking about them!

I'm not sure whether the Cherikoff bunyas are processed before sale. I hoiked 'em out of the shell (which was VERY boring indeed; would have been even more so if they weren't already halved!) and then processed them in a blender, which formed small "crumbs" (but not a powder). I then made them into fritters using a sweetcorn fritter recipe (involves eggs and breadcrumbs; very light and crunchy), and they were delicious. I can definitely recommend them in that format.

I rang Eden Seeds a couple of days ago to buy some bunyas, but they said they've had problems with them going mouldy and therefore they were no longer for sale this year.

Does anyone know of other suppliers of eating bunyas? Or even would anyone be willing to sell any if you have trees?
Where oh where have the witchetties gone? Where oh where can they be...?

Has anyone here seen/listed this?

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... :B:SS:AU:1

A rather hefty price-tag (well, not really at $5/kg, but the poor-student mentality has never left me re. big purchases  ) but if you're in NSW (or have a LARGE car-fridge & roadtrip planned), it could be a good buy...

And then you can send em my way! Jokes, I figure that frozen things ain't so good through the post, which is why I've never tried to buy anything from the east-coast suppliers I've seen stock-lists for... If I'm wrong about this, *please* let me know!

I used to work for a guy called Terry Moody in northern NSW that has a lot of Bunya's growing on his property in the rain forest on the Richmond Range near Old Bonalbo. He may be worth contacting, here's his details:

Bunya nut suppliers

Postby Shalem » Sat Dec 08, 2007 3:55 pm

I live in Brisbane and bought frozen bunya nuts from 2 places in SE Qld. I doubt if they would mail them out but you could ask. Otherwise, if you live around here or are visiting, Dilly Bag in Redcliffe sell them from their house. Contact Jo Connolly on (07) 3880 1320 or info@thedillybag.com.au. They come halved 250g $5. Bunya Mountains, about 3hrs drive from Brisbane, sells them in the store $15/kg. I also bought some there at the historical shop for $2/bag. Bunya Mtns have the largest natural bunya pine forest in the world, and is a beautiful place to stay or visit. Check out www.bunyamountains.com. If anyone knows any other sources in Brisbane, please let me know.
