Hi Tom,

You may have to start with a small pot first and pot up as the plants grow. I find they do much better in pots than in the ground, especially if elevated off the ground, but of course you will have to water them every day if you grow them this way. I have had some growing in 8 inch pots that have not gone into dormancy, yet all the ones in the ground have. The seedlings could be a bit soft before they develop their tubers. I use a very open, free draining potting mix with lots of perlite added. It holds enough moisture for a day, but drains very freely. They seem to love this.
Hope this helps, and I'm glad to know the progeny are still multiplying!

Just an update,
plants were potted on from seed raising tray and are thriving.
Since I moved the plants to pots, a couple more seeds have germinated in the seed raising mix/tray.
These 2 seeds germinated immediately after soil turning,
and it is of interest that traditional (indigenous) cultivation involved turning of the soil.
I wonder if this may be a clue to maximizing germination rates, on scale?

I meant to write "for scale" not "on scale".
Ian, have you tasted the yam, what is the flavour like,
and what size do they get?

Hi Ian,
How old were the plants that you harvested.
I've read when baked they taste like sweetened coconut.
What's your opinion?

Hi Tom,

Thay were at end of season, so probably a few months old. A bit tough, so maybe they should be harvested a bit earlier. They develop their tubers at a young age.

Regards

Yam daisy seeds wanted

Postby simplersjoy » Mon Mar 08, 2010 4:37 am

Hi,
Does anyone currently have any Yam daisy seeds or know where to purchase them? THe only native seeds I have available at moment are Kangaroo apple and Native indigo. I found Yam daisy seeds for sale from Horizon Herbs in America but thought there would be some closer to home!
Thanks,
Simon

I have some seed too but not much as i have had little luck with them. I bought some seed and none germinated. I bought some plants when I was in Vic and only one has survived but it's not looking lush but it is hanging in there. Got some seeds from it which I will be trying to grow.

But if you can't get them any other way///

http://www.wildseedtasmania.com.au/

usually stocks seeds and nindethana might as well

If i had sufficient quantity and was certain they'd grow i'd be more than happy to send out seeds.

I have heaps of seed but it's very old now and I'd only offer it in an emergency. Managed to kill the plant in my current rental garden... dang.
Good luck, Simon.
