A Cautionary Tale re Duboisia myoporoides, can I share what happened to me last night? Since my mission a while ago to replace the Buscopan pills I was taking for IBS (lower bowel cramps) with the Dm from which they are manufactured, I started just chewing on a couple of leaves and getting the same effect as the pills, plus a bit of dry throat. It works really well. I always get them from the same plant that grows down the road, they're common round here. Last night I was in great discomfort and not having used the leaves for a while, put the uggies on, went out on a collection mish, and for some reason chewed more like 5 or 6 leaves and some very small new leaf tips also. Pretty soon I started feeling weird and thinking 'woops!' I took a huge dose of activated charcoal, about 2 tbsp, which I fortunately had on hand (top stuff for poisonings), but I was already well on the way.
I sat down to research what I had got myself into but my eyes wouldn't focus on the screen, and when I looked in the mirror I thought there was an alien or maybe a human-cat hybrid looking back at me.

20 hours later the pupils still def a bit more dilated than they should be! Basically I tripped all night and into this morning. Funny scenario to find yourself in on a cold Sunday night when you were just going to go to bed with a hot water bottle. I was dog tired but refused to sleep on the off chance I didn't wake up. And anyhow there were all these people talking to me. The auditory hallucinations were fascinating, voices that seemed to sound so clear, but with this charming Pink Floyd quality. I couldn't lie still but turned around like a corkscrew for hours and itched all over, and drank warm water for the massive dryness. When I gave up and walked down to the beach to watch the sunrise, there were little dark sprites zipping by the corner of my eye and shaking the bushes. It seemed there was life force everywhere. It's dissociative; I found nothing frightening. I felt surprisingly normal, more normal than normal, in fact, but there's no accounting for character

No one seemed to notice I was an alien. Went to work today and did fine. Yet I still feel trippy; it fades off slow.
So yes, IMHO hallucinogenic. I don't aim to ever do it on purpose. I'm too scared. This is big magic to mess with, now I know this bush and I respect it. It's hard to find info about effects of corkwood, but I think there's a big overlap with Datura, which also features scopolamine and hyoscyamine - and all the scary thoughts apply. 'Steep dose-response curve,' for example. Wikipedia on Jimson weed seemed very relevant to my experience:

These are really powerful compounds, and really toxic. The levels are said to fluctuate unpredictably, and I think my friend Corky is in fine form at the moment!
