Canberra bushmeat suppliers?

Postby Muttley » Fri Jan 09, 2009 7:47 pm

Been living in Canberra for about 18 months now. Been to (and been quite impressed with) Ironbark Cafe, Fyshwick markets, Epic, Southside markets and um Woolies etc... I cant find anywhere that supplies fresh (rather than the cardboard tasting mass produced Kanga meat) Roo/Possum/Emu etc etc. Can anyone suggest any place i can get good (preferably wild) Aussie bush meat?

Incidently, i saw a young Roo smacked by a lorry a couple of months back. I stopped and checked to see if it was just injured (and therfore I could get help for it) but the hit had removed most of its brain. Never wanting to waste anything I took it home and got some fine steak (mostly rump). It tasted superb - I'd hung it for 4 days!! I keep my eye open for fresh roadkill all the time now.

Anyways, Canberra region for buying bushmeat?

Most of it is the packaged stuff, but Eco Meats at Belconnen Markets has possum, roo, wallaby, croc, and a whole range of other interesting things.

Apparently the supermarket in Yass has bulk side of roo, but I haven't gone there myself to check it out - yet.

I also haven't yet been game (heh) to use roadkill. Possibly because we've been lucky and haven't actually hit anything yet. If I hit it, and it wasn't in bits everywhere, I would consider taking it off the road (for safety, you know).

Note that in some (all?) states, collecting native roadkill isn't exactly legal, I don't think. So naturally the opinions in this thread are only those of the author etc and so on.

We have roos on our property and one of these days we're going to get in a shooter for "culling" purposes, and I'll learn how to correctly butcher meat ...

If you get some nice fresh roo meat from the shooter consider making some Biltong. Any Sth African you know will almost dissolve into tears if you let them have some. I think it is the gamey flavour that does them in.
